TRAILS - JUGHANDLE ECOLOGICAL STAIRCASE

The Jughandle Ecological Staircase Trail is located at Jug Handle State Reserve just north of Mendocino on the California coast. The trail crosses five terraces formed over the millennia by natural phenomenon of ocean waves carving into sandstone cliffs, that were subsequently uplifted by geological action. Each terrace is about 100,000 thousand years older and about 100 feet higher than the one below it, and each supports unique assemblages of grasslands, forests and even a sphagnum bog supporting insectivorous plants.
